cabdiwaxid cabdulahi w             The dollar: A game changer.

Iyana waxaan kaga gudbaa gobey liicoo ha jabin”by Hasan ganey.

From Kualalumpur to Timbuktu, the sounds of guns and suicide bombings have been unleashed since the end of the Cold War.  Mostly Muslim countries became war disaster zones. . The growing discontent among Ummaha toward their governments coupled with lack of progressive idealism led to social unrest.  The sectarian violence undermined the ability of states to end instability. The result of instability is suffering, destruction and death. States fail to address the core issue of the citizen such as poverty, illiteracy, free and fair elections and government owed to the people. Jobs became scarce as states fail to invest in education and infrastructure. Citizens were deprived of their right to elect their representatives in a fair and free environment. The state of Ummaha became final and static which supposed to be neither final nor stable but continuous search to find truth.  The leaders fail to find creative ways to reconcile the divergent interest groups and mode of governance. The Ummaha seemed skeptical that its current rulers will ever change their political direction without first improving their behavior and moral compass.  Most of the Ummaha seem to have no choice except either to the government’s abuse or take hardline approach. The battle of ideas between the supporters of the status quo and reformers has been debated for a long time but ended up with an armed conflict.

After 9/11 the Muslim despots took advantage the West’s stand against the threat of the real fanatics. Due the West’s lack of clarity regarding how to address the origin of the Muslim fanaticisms pushed them to be hesitant to confront the real abuse Muslim leaders committing against their citizen.  This hesitation mainly resulted from a genuine question: is this fanaticism born out of the Islamic religion itself or out of grievances against mode of Muslim governance.  The current different interpretations of Islamic teaching spilt the Ummaha into segments vying against each other. This created a moral conundrum for the developed world to watch silently the atrocities being carried out around Muslim world. The fact is the source of trouble in the Islamic world lay within their governance. Religion and fanaticism became a scapegoat to hide the ineffectiveness of the governing body. The brightest young Muslims were immigrating to the West seeking freedom and opportunity after they witnessed this volatility, and were unable to improve their political system. The centuries of injustices in Muslim society prevent them from seeing one another as follow citizens.  The grim realities of these countries destroyed any hope that Ummaha will be better and prosper in near future.

Looking at the Ummaha, the heroism of the society to feed the poor, and do the good was thrown out and materialistic ostentatiousness manifested it uglier face.  The modern new concept of borrowing from alien cultures and ideals resulted in moral depressions. The society failed to visualize the eternal forces of their truth that binds it together.  The Ummaha implicitly agreed to depart the sanctity of their traditions and replaced it with a worthless one. The world community senses that the Islamic Ummaha is on trial and question: whether it can stands against the social ordeals.  One historical development common to all societies is a continuous pursuit of the common good through trial and error, but the lack of determination to correct it supersedes the concept of reflection.

One nation that best demonstrates this concept of inadequate governance is Somalia. Somalia shares the suffering of the failed politics with the rest of Islamic nations.  It is hard to disassociate the quality of a leader to the attributes of a governing body.  President Hassan sheikh and his Damjadiid oligarchy brought in to the politics the use of money in the electoral process.  They lost their soul altogether, and their corruption became prevalent.  They have no respect for intellectual discussion and rule of law.  The Damjadiid syndicate dispensed the national treasury to bribe and attack the social consciousness as they put their imaginations to the dollar, which is a game changer. This regime does not stand on elevated ground to see the larger picture of the society; instead of viewing it weak and susceptible to corruption. The Damjadiid elites, if there any, perverted the totality of the Constitution and set a partisan in the legislative assembly to assert a factional policy that has not served the national interest. The political quarrelling and fist fighting in the legislative assembly were orchestrated from Villa Somalia aimed to weaken the checks and balances in order to discredit the noble institution. This approach set a precedent that the executive branch can outmaneuver the spirit and the intent of the constitution.

In the mind of Somali government, nothing matters as long as the continued culture of submissiveness and patronage on the part of Somalian poor stays as is. This approach inflicted temporal damage to the ethical value of the society. It forces the poor society to choose between the temptations of life and preserving the moral value. Money is not everything but there must be something else to uphold the throne of virtue. The material wealth and the political powers so eloquently displayed in Mogadishu are ugly and distaste as the majority of the residents are condemned to destitution. Worldly material accumulates at the expense of people degrade the morals and drain the spirit of the nationhood. These unhealthy minds of this government are hatched in the veins to lie and deceit. They measure political success by the accumulation of dollars that have been gained through trickery and theft. The party spirit of Damjadiid is repugnant to society and has insulted their moral value.  They despise and deject to advance sportsmanlike political fair play. The most extreme example of the regime’s political attitude can be reflected in the rejection of the concerns of community elders in matters of state buildings that merely reinforces the regimes character of not conformity toward the doctrine of engaging the civic society to fully participate in the wellbeing of the society.

The office holders of the Presidency solely relay the communal respectability, character and reputation with stand to attract trust and respect. It is not surprising; that President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud has been extremely sensitive to criticism of his leadership judgement. He was frightened by the verbal condemnations from the forces of opposition led by Mr. Tarzan. Damjadiid believe the dogma they have laid through their political beliefs is the only truth, and other view point cannot be assimilated or propagated. The origins of their political inclination rise from the Somali conflict of the late 1990. Instead of encouraging and enforcing a rule of law, the President blindly imitated the rule of the past. He failed to mark his legacy with diligence, expedience and overall superiority rule of law. The people of Somalia yearned for President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud to depart and leave behind the old politics of oppression, self-centeredness and to value the greatness of virtue.

President Hasan Sheikh came from humble beginnings; however, the people of Somalia recognized that a man who came from a poor family, with a disabled father could rise to the most prestigious job of President. He grew up during the peak of our nation in the early 1970 and speaks English very well. We thought that he read philosophy of governance that made him stark contrast from the two previous Presidents, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. The Somali people were behind President Hassan, because they all saw a bit themselves in President Hassan. It was an honor to install him into the greatest building of domestic architecture: Villa Somalia. President Hassan gained access to first class services and he enjoyed the company of powerful world leaders. He has been greeted by the beautiful and gracious ladies with glittering gems. This did not seem to satisfy him, though.

The last four years the government’s top officials displayed inconsistency, while leading a double life. On the outside, they eloquently speak and they are the spokesmen of the nation, but on the inside they are truly preoccupied with worldly material; they are one thing talkers. The political apparatus President Hassan installed failed to reignite the societal confident about the future. The people of Somalia lost faith in this regime’s abilities to efficiently use national resources, promote cohesiveness and dialog.
